anthropocene is just another word for nothing left to lose (2015)

The largest Atlantic hurricane recorded to date hit New York City in the morning hours of October 29th 2012. Hurricane Sandy was a storm-system with a diameter of 1800 km and took the lives of at least 233 people in eight countries. The assessed damage has been estimated to roughly $68 billion. The hurricane sparked a widespread political debate in the US regarding climate change and the hurricane's relation to global warming.

The audio-footage for this sound art-work was captured from the hd-cameras's microphones mounted on top of the Statue of Liberty and recorded in three parts starting 12.42 pm and ended at 17.54 pm on October 29th, 2012. It has since then been completed into the soundart-work "anthropocene is just another word for nothing left to lose".

The sheer brutality of the storm's impact creates strong overmodulations and distortions and pushes the microphones to its technical limits. The incomparability of this sound (incomparable in the sense of being the largest storm system recorded in meteorological history) is in my opinion

directly interlinked with the technical limits of our civilization in general. It displays certain powerlessness counteracting the current visions of technological omnipotence dominating the early Anthropocene.

Freely adapted from Marcus Steinweg's philosophy of

precipitancy, Samples (Überstürztes Hängen*) proves

the possibility of a concurrence of precision and excess.

The works haven't emerged from unique technical skills

but from sampling found photos, found video footage,

motorbike parts and computer code and are solely

chosen by the artists. Not having seen one of the

artworks previous to the exhibition, Jurgen Ostarhild

intentionally exposes himself to a loss of control thus

during the process of hanging, the communication

between the artists, the speculative he experiences as

outsider who is only documenting, he creates a

precision that demands art instead of aesthetics.

gesehen hat, setzt sich Jurgen Ostarhild gezielt einem

Kontrollverlust aus und erzeugt im Prozess des

Hängens, der Kommunikation der KünstlerInnen

untereinander, dem Spekulativen, den er als

Aussenstehender erlebt und dokumentiert, eine

Präzision, die Kunst statt Ästhetik einfordert.

 Andreas Templin ist ein in Berlin ansässiger Konzept- und Medienkünstler, Ausstellungsmacher und Stratege, dessen vielfältigen Tätigkeitsfelder sich frei zwischen dem Kultursektor und der freien Wirtschaft bewegen. Er studierte Fine Arts an dem Sandberg Institute Amsterdam (MFA). Umfassende internationale Ausstellungstätigkeit mit mehr als 60 Ausstellungsbeteiligungen wie „An Exchange with Sol LeWitt”, Cabinet New York & MassMOCA (2011), 'as if to nothing', Charles Darwin crying and other works', COEXIST, Tokio (2010) und Beteiligung in der Venice Biennale, Arsenale Novissimo (2009). 
Er ist Preisträger von Kunstpreisen in verschiedenen Kunstsparten wie den Hacking Urban Furniture Award (2.Platz), ZK/U Berlin und des Eco-Japan-Cups (Runner‘s Up Prize) Tokio. Internationale Aufmerksamkeit erregte die gemeinsam mit Raimar Stange kuratierte Ausstellung „Goodbye, World“ (apexart NYC 2021), eine Ausstellung zur Klimakatastrophe auf einer Eisscholle in Lappland. In seiner Dozententätigkeit engagierte er sich viele Jahre in Filmworkshops für UNICEF und die OneMinutesFoundation Amsterdam.       


Andreas Templin is a Berlin-based conceptual and media artist, exhibition organiser and strategist whose diverse fields of activity move freely between the cultural and corporate sector. He studied fine arts at the Sandberg Institute Amsterdam (MFA). He has exhibited extensively internationally, participating in more than 60 exhibitions, including “An Exchange with Sol LeWitt”, Cabinet New York & MassMOCA (2011), “as if to nothing”, Charles Darwin crying and other works', COEXIST, Tokyo (2010) and the Venice Biennale, Arsenale Novissimo (2009).
He is the winner of art prizes in various art categories, such as the Hacking Urban Furniture Award (2nd place), ZK/U Berlin and the Eco-Japan Cup (Runner's Up Prize), Tokyo. International attention was attracted by the exhibition “Goodbye, World” (apexart NYC 2021), curated together with Raimar Stange, an exhibition on the climate catastrophe on an ice floe in Lapland. In his teaching activities, he was involved for many years in film workshops for UNICEF and the OneMinutesFoundation Amsterdam.
