Andreas Templin and Andreas L. Hofbauer currently conduct a research-project at HMK Hoorn.

'Systemic constellation' or simple 'constellation' labels a process related tool, which is used both in a therapeutic field and as a decision model for several areas of application such as script writing or management agendas. Noninvolved proxies or agents re-enact in a special environment (unconscious and unknown) relations of influence, power, dependency, domination and so on in certain time and space frames.

„The Hoorn constellations“ pays no interest on such benchmarks, ideological or therapeutic, to optimize whatsoever. In fact it is an operational system. Communications as operations generate social systems. Elements (institutions, complex positions like „artist“, „museum“, „artwork“ etc.) communicate here and generate / mirror in doing so the homeostasis of the artworld which transforms itself in a sort of homeodynamics of the conditions of production, representation and economics of art (the state of contemporary art).

In a neutral space (white cube) a kind of dance is staged. The choreography follows the dynamic questionnaire of the public enquirers, who ask their questions in advance. The questions shall be a public reflection on the production, representation and economy conditions of art in all areas. From the fabrication of an art piece, its public representation to its marketing and branding at present and in the future. Variable arrangements of systemic constellation and interaction are staged as a field of vision, which become a contemporary critical tool of understanding.

The constellations of these questions have been filmed with two hd-cameras, which will develop (with interviews of the agents) to single-channel videoworks.

With fuel prices fluctuating and climate change causing monumental shifts in weather patterns, we have been forced to rethink our methods of food production and distribution. Natural disasters have wiped out entire crop cycles (the rice supply in Burma and the wheat harvest in Australia) and experts are saying that a global food shortage is imminent. The prices for wheat, corn, rice and other grains have steadily increased since 2005, causing food riots and hoarding from Morocco to Yemen to Hong Kong. The New York Times recently reported an estimate that Americans waste 27% of the food available for consumption. What are some possible solutions to these mammoth problems?

As more people change their habits, and as the government ratifies new regulations, we can make significant progress in the fight for food. The American public has shown awareness that the industrial-food system is deeply flawed. Expanded recycling and composting programs – as well as the growing local, organic and free-range movements – are indicative of a profound shift in the way we think about food. Consume will also include a series of public talks, screenings and workshops that confront and take up diverse food-related issues.

The videowork „as if to nothing“ comprises of a selection of statistical data of the earth and its population. This data, gathered from various governmental sources, displayed in a very specific and subjective interdependency, is combined with the highly dramatic second move of Bruckner‘s 7th symphony which is looped for the screening. This music-piece, a tour-de-force through the human emotions, is used to underline the weight of the subject-matter of this artwork.

Turkmenistan through the eyes of a Berlin artist

A few years ago the Amsterdam-based oneminutes-foundation, which promotes video works of exactly one minute in length, asked me if I would take part in a new cooperative venture, oneminutesjr, they had started with UNICEF. The idea was to create a pool of video artists from different countries who would be willing to conduct workshops with kids and facilitate the making of one-minute videos.

The project was a big success. So too was the oneminutes-concept that started it all, which quickly grew and now showcases and exhibits worldwide. I gladly accepted this invitation and work for them whenever time is available. I like the experience of working with kids, fostering their creative skills (which I think is the essence of the project), and leaving them with a little toolbox for producing media-content by themselves. The job is very different from what you usually do as a visual artist. Usually I split my time between meetings, planning, correspondence, travelling, producing, and exhibiting- in a sort of simulacrum, embedded in a closed society that sees itself as its main point of reference. I imagine other visual artists have such experiences. So the workshops also help me to touch down in the real world, which I find very healthy.

The concept of the workshops
The workshops usually last five days. Two facilitators, plus one person from UNICEF, and often someone from the local UNICEF office who helps in planning, translating, and finding props or locations conduct them. As equipment, we bring five mini-DV cameras, tripods, and MacBook Pros with all the common video editing software. On day one, the kids learn something about the basics of telling a story and filming. We show example movies, develop, and discuss the first proposals. On the second day, we finalize most of the proposals in individual talks and some scenes are shot. Shooting schedules fill the next two days, followed by editing individual videos with each participant, which usually takes up the 36 hours to their presentation on the fifth day. UNICEF is good at organizing screening-events and also helps placing the videos in contexts like local TV and film-festivals. This is very important because it shows that the videos are not produced just for their own sake Many receive prizes and always high acclaim at their first audience presentations. This success testifies to the value of the projects.

Turkmenistan
Upon arriving in Turkmenistan and entering the capital city of Ashgabat by car, we drove along an 8-lane parade street with 8 to 10-floor apartment buildings, all looking quiet new. My Estonian colleague pointed out that all the houses were symbolically assigned to different professions like mineworkers, doctors and so on. The whole inner city was completely new, monumental, and based on urban planning concepts that can only be described as cryptic. Vast spaces between the apartment blocks only added to their monumental character. Driving further to the centre, we encountered the golden statues. Everywhere there are golden statues of Saparmyrat Ataýewiç Nyýazow, known as Turkmenbashi, the “father of all Turkmens,” till his death in 2006 the lord-president of Turkmenistan. With the massive amounts earned from the country’s natural gas riches, and with the independence that came from the dissolution of the USSR, Turkmenbashi gave orders for a complete and monumental makeover of Ashgabat. There are huge green parks and fountains in a region with massive water problems. Police officers stand 24/7 at nearly every street corner. And, of course the golden statues. The new leader, President Gurbanguly Mälikgulyýewiç Berdimuhammedow, is now using all the buildings that do not have a statue of his predecessor in front to feature his huge portrait photographs. However, all these are eclipsed by a 50-meter tower with a golden statute of Turkmenbashi atop, rotating always to face the sun, and illuminated at night. Also remarkable and a clear indication of who had the final say in all things is the 8-lane highway which simply ends at a military-guarded gate to the president’s mansion. Nearby, is the 6 km long “Walk of Health” that Turkmenbashi built for the country’s parliamentarians to walk once a year (there is also a 30km extension to the mountains, for the healthier members of parliament to walk). All is floodlit, 24/7, as is almost every building in town. You can get an impression of the city here.
Ashgabat has everything a city should have: An opera house, a philharmonic building, a theatre. Although most of them hold ensembles, they are not allowed to play and perform very often. Other boulevards are plastered with universities. You might imagine this would provide everyone with a chance for a decent education. Not really, the prestigious universities ask up to US$100,000 for admission. Education seems to be very basic in the country, although probably all Turkmens read the book Ruchnama, a spiritual guidance book by Turkmenbashi. The workshop
Although UNICEF asked their local office to look for kids to participate in the workshop, we were presented with 23 film and TV students, accompanied by two teachers, quiet moderate older men. So instead of kids, with whom UNICEF usually works with, it seemed the authorities “assigned” film-students to attend the workshop. The workshop-theme was to create movies on HIV/AIDS. In the beginning, a presentation was held by an expert from the local UNICEF-office. As HIV is officially nonexistent in Turkmenistan (unofficial numbers suggest about 200 cases in Ashgabat), questions about what the students would know returned answers like: “not properly washed vegetables“ or even “inadequate speech“, which made that introduction more than necessary. The next difficulty was to develop ideas which would comply with the strict censorship-rules, something which is rather difficult due to the ailment‘s nature and to break open the slightly hermetic film-schooled concepts of the participants. We were excluded from most of the filming. Most of the film-students saw the workshop more as a competition to show off their skills. However, they were quite receptive to our preparatory suggestions and a couple of really nice movies were created which you can find here.

Andreas Templin's videowork "the 20th Century on visit in the 21st" is part of the World One Minutes-exhibition at Beijing's TodayArt Museum. The exhibition opens June 07th and will be on view till June 28th. The work will be on view in the EXTRA-section located in the main hall of the museum.
The World One Minutes exhibition in Beijing is the first of a series that will continue in Zagreb, Istanbul, Lisbon and São Paulo. The exhibition is included in the City of Beijing’s cultural programme connected with the Olympic Games.
A book called World One Minutes in video and literature has just been published especially for the exhibition with contributions by Arnon Grunberg and Cees Nooteboom from the Netherlands, the Australian Eliot Perlman, Danish poet Helle Helle and East European writers such as Igor Štiks and Vladimir Arsenijevic Read more about the book here.

He selects the location, arranges the extras - hundreds, if necessary - takes care of the props, acquires the rights, organizes the distribution, the promotion, the PR and the post-production.

In fact, Andreas Templin is the artist par excellence. He keeps control of everything. Yet his one and only focus is the idea and the concept underlying massive interventions in public space. Often, these are immaterial in character, nor do they boast any real visual documentation. He acts on an international scale, working together with all kinds of people inside and outside the artistic world, gives lectures, organizes discussions, sets up exhibitions, takes up a political stance, offers opposition against the laws of the art market and yet tries to function in the world of art. In Madrid he asked 150 people to wear a T-shirt featuring the names of Paul Virilio, Giorgio Agamben and Michel Foucault, as fashionable logos of the philosophical collapse of this day and age. He placed an actor across from them, carrying two placards, reading: Hell is Coming, World Ends Today. The perspective of religion in a nutshell.

From an early age, Andreas Templin has also engaged in music making, playing the piano especially. He likes to whistle some tune or other, and recorded a Bach composition in which he casually whistled the music, in accordance with John Cage's adagium that music is best ingested inadvertently when, walking down the street, you hear a melody coming from a house. "Andreas Templin plays Bach" at KunstVlaai A.P.I. Amsterdam

Andreas Templin's new work "Andreas Templin plays Bach" will premiere May 10th at this year's KunstVlaai A.P.I. Amsterdam. The artwork is a vinyl-record with music of Johann Sebastian Bach and is entirely whisteled by Andreas Templin.
At KunstVlaai a selection of tracks will be available to hear, the cover will be introduced in form of a display and pre-orders for the album will be taken from now on.
The album will be available in an edition of ten plus the album together with display in an edition of five.

The record-cover was photographed by Felix Broede. The album was recorded at the studio of Eric von Robertson in Amsterdam. It is produced with the kind support of Ingken Wagner. The mixing and pre-mastering will be conducted at the studio of Zoy Winterstein. The vinyl-record will be available from beginning June, a record-release party is being planned in Berlin. I would like to thank especially all of the above mentioned persons for their kind support.

Being asked by the oneminutes-foundation Amsterdam to review a few books within one minute, Templin decided to review Giorgio Agamben's "Homo Sacer" in a huge Chicago parking-garage and "Derek Jarman's garden" in the Millennium Park Chicago.
These recensions are being exhibited 24th till 27th of April in Amsterdam's prestigious OBA-library in the framework of Amsterdam World Book Capital and the international literature festival.

A live-publication with texts by Andreas L. Hofbauer, photos of and from the participants and a videochannel launched beginning February and will still develop till end of February.

The realm of schizoidity, doubleness and irrationality, is what Templin tries to grasp in his work, taking into consideration the possible interplays of these domain.
With his project “Top Ten”, Templin designed an intervention based on the names of the top-earners of 2006. The people leading this list made up to $ 1.5 - 2 billions as an income in 2006 (by being the director of various hedge funds). These flags and displays, visually orientated on Pop-Art, Art & Language and visuals of pop-cultural movements, will be installed at the venue surrounding the exhibition space and be part of the exhibition.

In “Sympathy For The Devil”, Templin plays with the visual material he found online, of individuals to commemorate a personal historic moment. The circumstances of the snapshot can range from an innocent and playful group meeting to sheer violence. The arrangement made by Templin manipulates the original narrative of the source material and questions the fetishizing potential of human beings.

Viewing Club is a nomadic artspace started 2005 in Berlin by artists Heike Kelter (D) and David Tidball (GB). Viewing Club is a non-profit project about artistic curatorial self-empowerment.

Since 2005 Viewing Clubs were held in Berlin, Hamburg, Bonn, Vienna and London. In every city partnerships were formed with curators, artspaces and art-organisations to cooperate or host Viewing Club presentations.
Viewing club is an open format, whose strength is its permanent alteration of exhibition concepts (for instance shows in pubs and karaoke bars, sculpture shows in parks or as attachment to White Cube shows) and its integration in different cities and their art-scenes.
Viewing Club is independent from common formats of exhibiting and thereby can be staged and initiated everywhere.

Viewing Club shows emerging and established positions of contemporary art. Through changing international participants (by invite or recommendation) a di-vers and unique temporary groupshow develops with every Viewing Club.

In cooperation with animal-rights activists, who illegally shot the footage for this installation, Andreas Templin developed this video-installation as a reaction and comparison to Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo. The groundwork/ approach for this videowork can be seen in Giorgio Agamben´s book 'Homo sacer' (1998), which is a survey of the history of the Western democratic state comparing it to an enormous concentration camp in its essence. He sees the modern state as a totalitarian event in the efficient management of naked biological life because contemporary sovereignty is exercised through bio-politics – the control of naked life. According to Agamben, “the power of decree to which concentration camp prisoners are subjected has no legal limitations and constitutes the secret matrix of the modern ad-ministrative state.".

The three screens show three different edits: The left screen concentrates on individual pigs, the center screen focuses on footage shot inside of the stalls and the right screen shows the structure of the pig mast.
Next to the three screens, extremely loud Death Metal is used to underline and intensify the deathmatch-atmosphere of this artwork and the fundamental questions it is raising with the chosen title.

“Sympathy for the devil” is a videoclip for the song of the Rolling Stones reissuing the thematics raised by the song in the present.
All footage for this videowork is found and taken from the web.
The web takes the parallel function of a “Pandora´s box” and a “catalogue of human obsessions” for this videowork.
This term first issued by Duchamp, ment in a sense of “designing a catalogue, which could display and fulfill any kown human obsession”)
is the leitmotif for this videowork, which can both be shown in screenings or as single work (looped)
A work about human desire and the contemporary image semantics, an intentional story told with images
trying to grasp into the time “after the end of history” (Fukuyama)

What is it about?

Recording of new versions of piano piece by Johann Sebastian Bach.
The whole album will be entirely whistled by Andreas Templin.
The recording will be distributed as an edition of 10 on vinyl.
The photographed cover of the LP will be available as a spatial display in an edition of 5 pieces as well.

The project is being realized since October 2006. First recording sessions are already completed.
The presentation of the new recording is planned as an opening in the form of a record release party.

description

After being busy with playing piano for 15 years myself, and by that, being busy with the classical music literature most of that time either, I became aware, that I would start to interprete the music I was busy with on the piano by whistling it.
Since I stopped having fascination with the classical piano literature and its constant repetition on the piano a few years ago, the only thing that is left apart from listening to it are the whistled interpretations.
Due to the yearlong „practice“ of whistled interpretations a similar character developed than it is reached by a yearlong practice on another instrument.
Now I am ready to provide a substantially new and authentic interpretation of Bach by bringing his music from the concert hall to the street level.

As John Cage, I find „a piece of Chopin sounding from a half-opened window mixed with street sounds“ far more interesting than its interpretation in a concert hall.
I like the idea of bringing such a complex piece of music to a sort of „street-level“ and to try to rejuvenate the interpretational concept of classical music within a work of contemporary art.
The cover and the displays will adopt the visual style of the CBS-Classical- covers of the 70ties-80ties. It will feature a portrait photograph of Andreas Templin done by an internationally well known photographer in this area.

"This was the second viewing club held in London, at The Uxbridge Arms, Elephant & Castle.
There were 150 artists contributing work. The D Band came from Berlin to play especially on the opening night.
Wheelie made a stop in London on their tour across Europe, which started in Berlin and finished in Glasgow. Work was exhibited inside Wheelie (photos here later). Again the event was well attended, a good time was had by all that could find it.

"In November 2005, there will be installations, sculptures, exhibitions and actions as well as films in different places of the city of Hamburg. The participants are young artists from Hamburg and internationally acknowledged artists.

Spaces which appear strange to the normal user of the city or which have withdrawn from his disposal, or where overfunctionalized regimentations of use imply latent manipulation, mesures and concepts put in concrete terms are practised for general re-vitalization and prevention of town planning faux-pas. Furthermore, different anti-regression mechanisms, exploit left-overs of quality of life, exit scenarios, utopian wrong tracks and inner migration schemes will lead to camp building in urban space."

Participating artists included: John Bock, Manfred Pernice, Luke Fowler and many others.
My work was part of the presentation of Viewing Club held in a bar at the Elbterrassen.

an installative work for the public space comissioned by the City Council of Nuremberg, Germany.

The installation took place in a medieval pedestrain's tunnel leading to the historical center of Nuremberg. A strong wind-machine of Munich filmstudios was placed in the beginning of the tunnel. The light was changed and a big soundsystem installed. With David Canisius of Deutsches Kammerorchester/ Yellow Lounge a selection of highly dramatic classical music was edited for this evening and replayed constantly. The visitors could pass through the tunnel and found themselves in the middle of a filmset-like "stormscene". After passing through the tunnel they got handed a text written by Dr. Andreas L. Hofbauer, titled "second-hand experience".

curated by Jay Brown of Lijangstudio, this exhibition was a mobile videoscreening happening in the streets of Kumming. It was repeated in Amsterdam/The Netherlands in 2006.
"The event explores the circumstances in which we see moving pictures. The videos will be shown from a mobile projecting machine, which will travel through the city at certain times of the evening, attracting crowds and showing video for short times anywhere from a few seconds to 20 minutes.
This event is sattellite to a festival of documentary films from China (www.yunfest.org)."
